Light Therapy

* Light Therapy is not recommended in pregnancy or for those suffering from Photosensitivity, Epilepsy or similar conditions.

What is it?

A professional Light Therapy device commonly used in hospitals and clinics is used to administer polarised full spectrum light (without the potentially harmful Ultra Violet rays emitted by the sun) to the body. Suitable for all ages.  Light Therapy is a very safe treatment with no known side effects however, in some instances you may be advised to consult your doctor before Light Therapy is administered.

How might it help me?

Light Therapy is known to be effective in all phases of healing. It reduces inflammation, activates the immune response, alleviates pain, improves circulation, increases lymphatic drainage and regulates the hormonal system as well as bringing homeostasis (balance) and healing to wherever it is needed in the body, be it on a physical, emotional, mental or spiritual level.

In the 21st century, the benefits of Light Therapy have become widely recognised and  utilised by medical and health professionals and studies continue into the use of light alongside conventional medicine.

Light Therapy has been used to help numerous conditions including :

  *Chronic pain

  *Back and joint problems

  * Inflammatory conditions

  *Sports and other injuries

  *Circulatory disorders

  *Wound healing

  *Skin conditions

  *Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)

  *Sleep problems

  *Loss of motivation

  *Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME)

  *Decreased immunity

  *Nervous exhaustion

  *Emotional problems

  *Respiratory conditions

It can also be used to boost collagen production and to promote general body balancing, relaxation and a sense of well being.

Where does it come from?

The ancient Greeks were the first to document the healing benefits of light and the Egyptians and Romans also had an awareness of the effects of light and colour on the human body and used these as an aid to healing.

The use of light for healing has been present throughout history, but interest in this has intensified since the 19th and 20th centuries

In 1991 Dr Jacob Liberman published his book 'Light, Medicine of the Future' in which he clearly showed how light is capable of influencing the body's ability to heal on all levels and that the body's response to light is not purely through the eye.

It is known that the human organism transforms light into electrochemical energy, which activates a chain of biochemical reactions within  the cells.

Scientific studies and clinical trials have since confirmed that Light Therapy can activate the body's own healing mechanisms.

Does it hurt?

No. The treatment does not hurt, although you may feel some reactions during the treatments.

Can I have it if I am pregnant?

No. It is not considered suitable during pregnancy.

Do I need to undress?

For therapeutic purposes it is necessary to administer the light directly onto the skin so you may be asked to remove or lift some clothing. You will not be required to completely undress.

What does a treatment involve?

After an intitial consultation You will be asked to sign a consent form. A treatment plan will be suggested and discussed with you and you will have the opportunity to ask any questions you might have.

You will be asked to lie on a comfortable bed in a darkened room.

Light will be administered to you using a Q Light Pro Light Therapy lamp, using coloured filters as appropriate.

The lamp can be a little noisy so relaxing music can be played to help mask this.

Some people experience physical sensations such as tingling or see colours even with their eyes closed. Others fall asleep.

How long will it take?

A session can last from 20 minutes to an hour depending on the condition being treated. For example wound healing only requires a 20 minute treatment, but a general relaxation or SAD treatment involving colour filters can last up to an hour. Each treatment is unique to the client.

What happens afterwards?

You should feel relaxed and comfortable. You may find pain levels drop and you feel calm and energised with a sense of well being. It is a good idea to drink plenty of water afterwards and relax if you can. Some people find they feel a little unwell as their body goes through the process of detoxing. This is a temporary effect.

How many treatments will I need?

This depends very much on the condition being treated, but for general body balancing a course of three treatments 1-2 weeks apart is recommended.

Can I have other treatments at the same time?

Yes, Light Therapy can enhance the effects of other treatments.

What will it cost?

A 60 minute adult Holistic Light treatment costs £40.

Fees are reduced accordingly for shorter therapeutic sessions and start at £5.
